Awesome sites digest

.
.
Using Twitter as I do, and just generally being exposed to all sorts of sites in all sorts of places, I come across some really good ones from time to time, so here are a few I that come to mind:

This site allows you to quickly share a file with others by simply uploading it to the 2shared site. The browse box is right on their home page. Once the upload is complete, it returns a live link which you can send to others so they can download the file. Not sure how this compares to usendit, but best of all - 2shared requires no login!
This twitter service is ideal for those with multiple Twitter accounts. The latest v2.0 which was released just the other day is superb. It gives the advanced Twitter user exactly what they want, all in the right places. I wish the "Show more" link showed more than it did (past tweets) and Hootsuite don't seem to be too hot in the support department. Ostensibly, they provide support via getsatisfaction.com but I have 3 outstanding queries - the first being 3 days old - and am still awaiting a response.
So much has been said about these already - suffice it to say, they are both brilliant. I found the wedding video quite moving because of the vast amounts of happiness that excuded from my screen when I watched it, and the divorce version was very cleverly done and very funny. Here's a recreated added bonus.
This one I find difficult to grasp! A still 360 degree photo I can just about understand, but how do you take a 360 degree video and then allow the viewer to wander around anywhere (up, down, left, right) while the video is playing? Knot together several videos all taken simultaneously whilst pointing in different directions? Well I couldn't see the join, could you?
For small to medium sized companies, serious about getting more online exposure, adding themselves to Brownbook.net, the free global business directory anyone can edit, is a must. Fields supplied include: web, blog, Twitter, VoIP and IM. It's also possible to add your QR code as well as your Google Street View link plus widgets and it includes bidgets (for export to other sites). Brownbook.net has to be the coolest business directory ever!
Do you know your rights? This beautiful site is packed with data - pretty much everything there is to know about your rights, especially the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - and it includes a PSA for each right given in the UDHR, plus a documentary on the history of the subject. Join the campaign to prevent human rights violations in those countries where the UDHR is not being adhered to.

New Version of izimi Offers Private Share & Instant Photo Galleries

izimi, the exciting and innovative new web application plus social networking site (www.izimi.com) that allows you to instantly share anything with anyone, has just been upgraded - big time - in response to users' requests.

When you share a file on your PC (that's ANY file, no matter the size or type), it is given a URL and so becomes instantly accessible by anyone on the internet with a browser. With the new version, you now have the choice to share it publicly (the file is posted onto izimi.com where it is imediately searchable from within the site) or privately (the file is not posted onto izimi.com). In both cases, the URL generated by the application for that file can be sent in e-mails or via your IM (instant messaging). Here's an example of a publicly shared file: http://david.izimi.com/A22188E/CIMG0548.jpg and here's an example of a privately shared file: only kidding! You can also change the status of any file from public to private (or vice-versa) at any time with a single click.

The ability to create instant galleries is a completely new feature (and is my personal favourite). I would hazard a guess, since izimi = no uploading, that there's no faster way anywhere on the internet to make 100 pictures available for all the world to see. It's as simple as: Select 'New Gallery', select your 100 photos, type name of gallery - DONE! That's 4 clicks and one gallery name - it's that fast. The gallery then has its own URL which can also be e-mailed or IM'ed. Here's an example of a gallery: http://marc.izimi.com/gallery/random

Two other cool new features:
  • Multiple file sharing (instead of one by one) - similar to the gallery option and just as fast, but the files are accessible individually rather than being within a gallery
  • Shared files can also be organised into folders - here's an example folder that contains an .xls, a .doc, a .jpg and a .wmv: http://www.izimi.com/folder/?47
Even more enhancements are being developed as we speak for the next version, so stay tuned to izimi.com.

Free and Unlimited izimi Undercuts Established Photo and Video Hosting Websites

izimi Saves Users More Than $1bn. Yes, that’s $1 Billion!

Oxford (UK), San Francisco (USA) - June 25, 2007: izimi (www.izimi.com) is causing nervousness amongst the leading photo and video sharing websites by offering all users totally unlimited and unrestricted photo and video sharing - for free. It’s conservatively estimated that izimi could save internet users well over $1bn in membership fees to photo and video hosting websites, with individual users each saving up to $25 per year.

But it is not just about cost. izimi has a unique approach to photo and video sharing - instead of users having to upload their photos and videos to several different websites, which takes time, izimi makes photos and videos instantly available direct from the user’s own computer with just a few mouse clicks. Like traditional photo hosting services, photos and videos are accessed with a simple and persistent URL, making them easily linkable and embeddable in blogs, forums, websites and social spaces, and URLs can also be sent easily to friends, family and colleagues by email and instant messaging.

Marc Lyne, CEO and David Ingram, VP

izimi VP, David Ingram, says, “Just a few years ago something like izimi would not have been possible - our home internet connections were just too slow and too flaky. But today, more and more of us are connected to fast always-on broadband internet connections, and with that comes a greater degree of self-empowerment. izimi gives us all a technically advanced but simple-to-use means for sharing our media and files, whatever format they are, to anyone else on the internet without the need for us to upload them to intermediaries and without our audiences having to get any special software”.

izimi was designed to incorporate the best elements of P2P file sharing with the best elements of the web-based photo and video hosting services: Like P2P but unlike upload websites, there is no need for a user to upload photos or videos that he wishes to share – it is just ‘click and instant share’. Unlike P2P but like upload websites, a user’s audience doesn’t need any special software to view the shared files - just a web browser.

That unique combination means that any person can share photos, videos, and music literally instantly with just a few mouse clicks, yet they are available via standard URLs and link codes so can be accessed by anyone with a web browser and linked to and embedded in regular web pages.

About the software: izimi is free downloadable application that you install on your computer in order to share your media and files. It is available immediately from www.izimi.com. izimi.com also provides an entire social networking experience where you can view users’ profiles and view and comment on what they’re sharing. About the company: izimi, owned by eSeekers Ltd, was founded in 2005 and is based in Oxford UK and San Francisco CA USA.

izimi in rap

At the recent San Francisco New Tech Meetup - http://newtech.meetup.com/ - the most unusual 60-second open mic slot of the evening was definitely izimi's! izimi VP of Product, David Ingram, stood up to make his presentation, only to have the mic taken from his hands by local San Francisco rapper and freestyle artist Tommy. Tommy went on to rap the 60 second slot and the crowd went wild. When he'd finished he nonchalently handed the mic back to a speechless Ingram!

izimi enables you to publish and serve files, photos, music and videos, in fact anything, straight from your PC to anyone with a browser. A new version of izimi with many enhanced features will be available in a few weeks.

(NB: this video is being 'live shared' straight from the izimi CEO's home PC)

izimi gets superb launch reviews

The Web 2.0 internet publisher/social network start-up called izimi, which went live 5 March 2007, has managed to get itself some great post-launch reviews. The service turns your PC into a personal web server and gives a persistent URL to every file you decide to publish - that's any file of any type and size!

Here's an idea of the reaction it's getting from the media and bloggers:

FT.com: 'izimi in PC file sharing advance' by Chris Nuttall
"An internet service that allows users to bypass social networking sites and host their own videos, pictures and other files launches on Monday. izimi takes to its logical conclusion the Web 2.0 trend of users having more control of their internet content. It allows them to serve material from their own computers instead of uploading it to a website, such as MySpace, or Flickr, the photo-sharing site."

The Social Networking weblog: 'No More Uploading Music and Videos'
"izimi is a new kind of social networking site. On your izimi profile page you can have as many music, video and picture files as you want. Unlimited content of anything you want!"

Computer Active: 'New website turns your PC into a file sharing server'
"Uploading of any type of file visible to all on website - A new website called izimi has launched that allows you to upload any kind of file for sharing with the world. Files are hosted on your PC and made visible on izimi's website."

internetnews.com: 'A New Angle, Peer-to-Web Publishing'
"If YouTube and reality television haven't already given most folks the 15 minutes of fame predicted by Andy Warhol, perhaps izimi will do the trick."

TechNewsWorld: 'The Next YouTube' by Rob Enderle
"Every once in a while, I run into a product that gets me to stop, pause and rethink things, and last week I had such an experience. izimi, which launches today, is such a product....It's worth checking out. As we think about what happens when we move to the next generation of broadband, instead of going the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Latest News about Google direction where everything is hosted, things could come back to everything being local. Peer architectures could rule, pushing the pendulum back to where Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Latest News about Intel and Microsoft would like it to be -- in the home and closer to the client. I actually think this would be a really cool part of the new Home Server platform, since that product is designed specifically to do things like this......."

Memex 1.1: 'izimi - self-hosted user generated content'

"izimi places the power right in your hands, where it should be - it’s a truly democratic web. With izimi there’s no need to upload your content to any server: you decide what you’ll publish, there are no limits on quantity or quality ([it] won’t degrade your videos, photos or music), and you retain ownership and control."

The Web Pitch: 'The Top 25 Web 2.0 Start Ups from the UK'
"izimi - Self-publishing, being able to serve files, photos, music and videos up from your computer to friends through their web browsers."

North River: 'izimi'
"One company we will discuss is izimi, the new file sharing software. Basically, izimi obsoletes YouTube. This is a phenomenon I advised customers about over a decade ago when I demonstrated that when information costs fall far enough, strange things happen."

I'm only blogging to be trendy: 'Middleware players'
"Today Ive come across izimi. This thing rocks for many reasons. Primary among which is that its another Web20 UK start up.. we cant have enough..really. At the moment, it allows you to upload anything to a social environment... yes... anything.. so you tag it and push it out and send the links to your mates..nifty."

Indian Inside - Technology, Entertainment and Me: 'Turn Your PC into a Media Server with izimi'
"izimi allows you to serve files, photos, music and videos straight from your PC to anyone with a browser …Full Control of your media and that too totally FREE of cost ! isn't that interesting ? No uploading business and no hosting hassles too.. You can just publish and serve any file type, any size, any quantity to anyone – all [they] need is a web browser."

Go2Web2: The Future of Internet Publishing
"izimi is a new SUPER application that allows their users to share any file (type or size), right from their machine to the web in no time!"

That's not a bad start!

izimi - You control your own media

YouTube-killer uses P2P

So izimi is now live, in beta, awaiting launch date: Mon 5 March 2007.

The above article - probably the first of many - has appeared on the PC Advisor site, written by Paul Trotter, about izimi's enormous potential and its imminent launch.

Paul calls izimi P2P, but it's actually P2B (Peer to Browser) - a term coined by David Ingram I believe, izimi's VP of Product Marketing. It means that you can serve files, photos, music and videos straight from your PC to anyone with a browser. The izimi application (not available until 5 March) enables you to easily publish any form of electronic content to any other internet user with just a few mouse clicks and no technical know-how. You can publish and serve an unlimited number of files of any type or size to anyone – all they need to receive, view or download these files is a web browser since each file published (searchable on www.izimi.com) gets its own URL. How cool is that?

By the way, that izimi logo above is being served directly from my home PC!

If I turn my PC off by mistake, if I'm rebooting or if we've had a power cut, then it will simply say "This content is currently unavailable".
